Welcome to London, Jupiter Clipper
London’s newest river bus vessel will be entering service later today as the 172-capacity Jupiter Clipper cruises into the capital.
The youngest member of Thames Clippers’ passenger fleet follows the June launch of its twin sister, Mercury Clipper, who first made the 200 nautical mile journey from the Wight Shipyard Co Ltd on the Isle of Wight to Trinity Buoy Wharf in east London.
The arrival of Jupiter Clipper positions London’s leading river boat service as the biggest fast commercial passenger fleet operating solely in English waters. Thames Clippers’ commission for the two new passenger boats also set a record for the largest fast ferry order for a UK shipyard in over two decades with non-government backed funding.
Sean Collins, Thames Clippers’ co-founder and CEO, said: “Being able to welcome our newest fleet member is a great milestone for Thames Clippers as well as the capital itself. Having increased our capacity along the River Thames by 30 per cent in the last two years through the continued introduction of new boats we’re proud to be playing a key role in opening up this London lifeline to even more commuters and visitors. We are very proud that these boats have been built in the UK, by a yard that was only established two years ago and following the attention from our recent new builds is now receiving significant international interest and enquiries for high quality fast ferries.”
Both passenger catamarans form a £6.3 million investment in London’s port and transport infrastructure to provide additional capacity across the River Thames network. The build process for Jupiter Clipper and Mercury Clipper took 10 months, creating over 75 new jobs across the Isle of Wight and London in the process.
Thames Clippers is committed to making the River Thames as accessible to as many people as possible, and supports the PLA’s Thames Vision of doubling the number of people travelling by river and its target of 20 million commuter and tourist trips every year. By autumn 2017 three piers will have been added to Thames Clippers’ network since 2015; Plantation Wharf Pier, Westminster Pier and Battersea Power Station Pier.
