6,500 LEGO® bricks and it floats!
To celebrate the launch of two new boats joining London’s growing river network, MBNA Thames Clippers is unveiling a new boat in the LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort’s world famous Miniland today.
Built using 6,500 LEGO® bricks, the 76.2cm cm long boat is an exact LEGO sized replica – built to a scale of 1:50 – of the new Mercury Clipper, launched by MBNA Thames Clippers this month. Mercury Clipper is now in service in the capital after making its 200 nautical mile journey from the Isle of Wight in June.
Weighing in at 6.2 kg, the new LEGO mini MBNA Thames Clippers boat took LEGOLAND’s team of Model Makers over 67 hours to build. Made of 6,500 colourful bricks, the mini boat is now on display in the Resort’s Miniland attraction, complete with LEGO 8cm captain made of 30 bricks, crew, lifejackets, commuters and tourists.
In comparison, the two new 172 capacity passenger boats (Mercury Clipper and Jupiter Clipper), a £6.3 million investment in London’s port and transport infrastructure, took ten months to build. The boats were built at the Wight Shipyard Co Ltd on the Isle of Wight. With the order, MBNA Thames Clippers set the record for the largest fast ferry order for a UK ship yard in over 20 years with non-government backed funding.
It is the first time that one of London’s popular river buses has made an appearance in Miniland London at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort. The new mini MBNA Thames Clippers’ vessel joins other famous attractions such as the Coca Cola London Eye, City Hall and Millennium Bridge. The largest model in Miniland is the Canary Wharf Tower which is 5.2 metres high with the pigeons in London's Trafalgar Square being the smallest made up of just five LEGO bricks each.
Sean Collins, chief executive officer, MBNA Thames Clippers comments:
“With the largest fast commercial passenger fleet operating in London carrying over four million visitors and commuters alike last year, we felt that it was time for us to appear alongside the other iconic London attractions in Miniland at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort. The whole team is excited to see our new boat and captain immortalised in LEGO.”
“We are committed to growing the river bus network in London and want as many commuters and visitors to realise the huge benefits in terms of speed, comfort and frequency of travelling by river in London. “
