Attractions by Boat

Some of the most famous cultural, historical, educational and entertaining attractions in the world are situated on the River Thames. Below is a list of piers on our route as well as some of the attractions in each area. All attractions listed are either located on the riverbank itself or just a short walk from the pier.

Bankside Pier

Tate Modern

The finest display of international modern art in Britain, housed in a stunning transformation of the former Bankside Power Station by architects Herzog & De Meuron. Entrance to the permanent collection and the impressive Turbine Hall is free. Tate Modern also holds world-acclaimed temporary exhibitions as well as an extensive children's programme. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the open air playhouse designed in 1599, where Shakespeare worked and wrote most of his greatest plays. The theatre season runs from May to September. Throughout the year you can visit the biggest exhibition of its kind devoted to the world of Shakespeare from Elizabethan times to the present and take a fascinating tour of the reconstructed theatre. Bankside

Bankside is one of central London's riverside destinations, home to some of London's most iconic attractions: Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe.

In the summer you can admire views of the City of London and St Paul's Cathedral whilst enjoying an al fresco drink on Bankside's riverside walkway.

In the winter explore the medieval streets around Borough Market, stumble upon the area's smaller visual arts venues, enjoy a lunchtime concert at Southwark Cathedral or learn about and sample the world's wines at Vinopolis, London's unique wine tasting attraction.

Bankside Gallery

Home to the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Bankside Gallery shows a changing programme of exhibitions, which includes contemporary watercolours and original prints by Members of the two Societies. Almost all works are available for sale and the Gallery's Bookshop stocks a wide range of books, materials and cards for the discerning art lover. Tel: 020 7928 7521

Floatworks

Since its inception in 1993, The Floatworks has rapidly established itself as the leading Floatation centre in the World. Floatation involves floating on top of a 30cm deep pool of salt water in an especially designed tank to achieve a profound feeling of deep relaxation and well-being. Tel: 020 7357 0111

Golden Hinde

The Golden Hinde is an historically accurate replica of the ship in which Sir Francis Drake completed the second-ever circumnavigation of the world between 1577 - 1580. The ship is open to the public for self-guided and guided tours with costumed actors and it is even possible to join Drake and his crew on an overnight imaginative voyage of adventure. Jerwood Space

The bike sheds of the old Orange Street School now form a major contemporary art gallery, housing the year-round exhibitions of Jerwood Visual Arts.

Menier Chocolate Factory

We're not a factory and we don't make chocolate... but we do produce some of the most exciting and innovative theatre in town. Whether world premieres of new writing or lavish revivals of classic musicals, there is something in the programme to suit all theatrical tastes. Menier Gallery

The Menier Gallery, housed on two floors of the historic Menier Chocolate Factory, offers a dramatic space in which to view and exhibit works of art and design. The Menier Gallery is just 2 minutes walk from Borough Market and 5 minutes from Tate Modern. The Menier Gallery is run by the registered charity Paintings in Hospitals. Tel: 020 7407 3222

Rose Theatre Exhibition

The Rose, built in 1587, was the first Elizabethan Theatre on Bankside and was where Shakespeare learnt his craft. Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition also offers tours of the nearby Rose Theatre site to pre-booked groups and during matinee performances throughout its theatre season. Vinopolis - Unique Wine Tasting Attraction

For anyone who likes a glass of wine, Vinopolis provides the perfect way to spend an afternoon enjoying the pleasures of the wines and spirits of the world. Borough Market

Great Britain's finest gourmet food market has been voted by Londoners as their favourite shopping experience. Borough Market offers specialities directly from the producers, organic products, delicatessen, cheese, wines, fish and imported continental fare. Southwark Cathedral

Southwark Cathedral is London's oldest Gothic church. A church has occupied the site for over 1400 years. It has connections with William Shakespeare, US-university benefactor John Harvard and the first English poet, John Gower. Drop by on Monday lunchtimes for an organ recital or Tuesday afternoons (3:30pm) for a short music recital. Tel: 020 7367 6700
