Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the open air playhouse designed in 1599, where Shakespeare worked and wrote most of his greatest plays. The theatre season runs from May to September. The Golden Hinde is an historically accurate replica of the ship in which Sir Francis Drake completed the second-ever circumnavigation of the world between 1577 - 1580. The bike sheds of the old Orange Street School now form a major contemporary art gallery, housing the year-round exhibitions of Jerwood Visual Arts.

The Rose, built in 1587, was the first Elizabethan Theatre on Bankside and was where Shakespeare learnt his craft. Southwark Cathedral is London's oldest Gothic church. A church has occupied the site for over 1400 years.
